Aside from using a board for beginners it is especially important to start learning how to surf at a suitable beach, ie, a supervised beach with no rocks. Before entering the water, it is imperative to become familiar with safety rules and priority.

The first steps we take is where we can stand on the ground. When a wave comes you turn around and take the wave perpendicular to the wall with the board facing the beach, still lying down. We start by laying down on the board before the oncoming wave, paddling hard to catch it. Until then we still have to practise the technique as to stand, we can try this only when the board starts moving. It is now important to stay relaxed. A weight shift forward accelerates the board, and if you put your weight back, you stop the board. If you put too much weight back on the board you'll end up back in the water ...

You can save a lot time, frustration and unnecessary risk if you join a surf course. In a group of people motivated by the same goal you can learn more easily. Indeed, it is not necessary that you buy a surf board without knowing if you like surfing, and after the course your teacher will tell you exactly what type and size of board is the best for you.

How to recognise a quality surf schools?

  • The Surf workshop lasts at least 20 hours
(or if you don't have a lot time, at least 10)
  • Classes are taught in person by an instructor who holds a recognized surf monitor title of the European Surfing Federation and preferably a BS in PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND SPORT.
  • It also does not help if the professor owns the school but the classes are taught by assistants.
  • The Surf workshop consists of a systematic series of exercises to help you progress step by step to avoid unnecessary frustration.
  • The teacher will individually analyze your mistakes and give individual advice for your progress.
