A must see are the ancient caves of Altamira next to Santillana del Mar, Monte Castillo in Puente Viesgo and Pindal in Unquera with their amazing stone-age paintings and breathtaking rock formations.

In the mountains you can discover many rural villages where time seems to have stood still, e.g. Tresviso that some years ago only was accessible by foot or Bárcena Mayor surrounded by beautiful deep forest.
